Today’s walk is relatively short so as to allow time to explore both the enchanting villages of Zugarramurdi (the Witches’ Museum, fine rural architecture and famous caves) and Urdax (with its pilgrims’ hospital, more rural architecture, riverside scenery…and another set of beautiful caves). Rather than take the direct path between the villages, we climb up to the pastureland around Ibaineta and then on to the spectacular rocky outcrop of Mt Azkar which, despite its modest height, is suspended directly above Urdax and affords fine views over the Western Pyrenees and southwards. Urdax itself is a key point on the Camino Baztanés branch of the Pilgrim’s Route to Santiago. There is also another option to climb Atxuria as an out and back walk from Ibaineta for those who missed out on this emblematic peak on Day 3.
