Day 3: Etxalar to Zugarramurdi

with optional ascent of Atxuria

Option 1: Starting from Etxalar, a pretty route up through beech forest returns to the border ridge on a different path, from where a fine walk affords stunning views down to the French side. This is followed by a descent via a beautiful mountain river to the ancient caves of Sara on the French side and on to the caves and village of Zugarramurdi, famous during the Inquisition for the witch trials that took place here.

Option 2:  As above, but with an optional ascent of the croissant-shaped outcrop of Atxuria from the border ridge and an alternative descent to the caves of Sara.
