Day 5: Urdax to Erratzu

with optional ascent of Alkurruntz

Option 1:  From Urdax we hike along or close to a section of the GR65 long distance path – a branch of the St James’s Way known as the Camino Baztanés– over the Otsondo Pass and into the Baztan Valley proper. The route then descends to the delightful walled village of Amaiur with its 15th century castle, famous for being the last outpost of Basque resistance in Navarra, and then on to the hamlet of Bozate, once home to a much-maligned mysterious people known as the Agotes, who were persecuted for centuries both here and in parts of France, despite being famed for their carpentry and stone masonry skills. Today’s walk ends at Erratzu, another very traditional village with more fine examples of rural architecture.

Option 2: Follows the same route as above, but with a detour to the striking peak of Alkurruntz for splendid views over the entire region, before joining the path to descend to Amaiur.
