The self-guided walks offered via this website are up to 7 days in length and, in most cases, a shorter, easier route is offered as an alternative to the full route.
Each day’s walk has been carefully selected and mapped out to ensure that routes pass through some of the region’s most beautiful landscapes, and also give the walker the chance to visit some of the most appealing towns and villages and learn about the ancient and pagan history, local culture and other aspects of life common to these borderlands.

All participants are provided with a special travel pack containing a detailed description of each day’s walk, a route map and other relevant information such as emergency telephone numbers. The descriptions include details regarding grade of difficulty, cumulative elevation gain, coordinates and notes about the history and traditions of each place and points of interest along the way. Some days include the chance for more experienced walkers to climb summits, while others are suitable for ramblers of all levels. Even in the case of the more strenuous routes, there is always an alternative, lower level option provided. Bespoke itineraries can be put together on request.

Comfortable accommodation is provided in charming rural inns and guest houses in attractive old towns and villages along the route. Included in the price are breakfast and full evening meal. As your luggage is transported for you each day, you only need to carry a day pack, knowing that the rest of your things will be waiting for you when you arrive each afternoon at your accommodation.

Note that It is a condition for booking any of the guided or self-guided walks described on this Basque Country Walks website that participants be covered by a suitable travel insurance policy that includes walking over hilly/mountainous terrain up to 1500 metres that is valid for Spain (and the French Pyrenees, in the case of the Baztan-Bidasoa Route), and includes emergency evacuation.
