Day 1: Elurretxe to Lesaka

with optional ascent of Irumagarrieta-Aiako Harria/Peñas de Aia

Transfer from Donostia-San Sebastián to start of walk

Starting from the picnic site of Elurretxe at 500 metres, there is an optional ascent of Irumugarrieta, the first and most accessible of the three peaks of Aiako Harria/Peñas de Aia. The main route itself follows the GR121 long-distance footpath from Elurretxe around the mountain past small waterfalls to the pass at Aritxulegi and then descends to the San Antón Reservoir, where it joins a branch of the GR11 Trans-Pyrenean footpath. From here it passes over undulating hills and meadowland dotted with farmhouses to the pretty town of Lesaka, which is traversed by a fast-flowing stream and has fine examples of the traditional rural architecture typical of the region.
