The Inland and Coastal Gipuzkoa Route

Grand walking tour OF THE INLAND MASSIFS OF GIPUZKOA, THE LASTUR VALLEY AND BASQUE COAST GEOPARK.

This new 4-day route route offers the chance to hike through the Ernio and Izarraitz massifs, explore the beautiful unspoilt Lastur valley and on to the most spectacular part of the coast of Gipuzkoa – the geological phenomenon known as the flysch between the coastal towns of Deba and Zumaia, protected within the Basque Coast Geopark. The route starts from the picturesque village of Errezil, nestling beneath Mt Ernio, one of the Basque Country’s best loved mountains. Hikers follow a network of footpaths over ridges, through beech forests and along unspoilt valleys through the pretty villages of Aizarna, Zestoa, Lastur, Deba and Arriola for the first 3 days, and the last day along the entire length of the Basque Coast Geopark dominated by the flysch to the bustling fishing village of Zumaia. It is also possible to arrange extra nights’ accommodation at any of the villages along the route – this is particularly recommended in Zumaia at the end of the walk, where the hike can be complemented by further exploration of the rugged coast and/or quality time unwinding at one of the town’s beaches, recently used as a film set for Season 7 of Game of Thrones.

For the last night, you can choose between a clifftop stay at the working farm of Santa Klara or, for a bit more luxury, at the Talasoterapia-Zelai Hotel&Spa right above Itzurun beach, on the edge of town. Guests can arrange a 90 minute circuit in the hotel’s spa and/orn a range of individual treatments/massages. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE TALASOTERAPIA-ZELAI HOTEL&SPA REQUIRES A MINIMUM 2 NIGHTS’ BOOKING IN JULY AND AUGUST.
